Layering necklaces is one of my favourite ways to make an outfit more interesting. Whether it is a plain turtleneck jumper or a simple summer blouse, you can make them stand out by a beautifully combined layered necklace. Today I am going to show you 3 awesome ways on how to layer necklaces. I have also prepared a cheat sheet with 5 creative ideas on how to combine your necklaces. Let's get started.
Layering By Geometrical Shape
Geometric jewellery pieces are easy to combine with different styles. That's one of the things I love about them. So, how do you do it?
Here are some options to select from:
Option 1: Layering same metal but different shapes
Choose 3-5 necklaces with a geometrical shape
Make sure to leave some space between them while layering
Use a classic bar necklace as a dividing point like in the picture below.
Option 2: Layering same shapes
If you have similar necklaces that belong to one style, try to combine them. In the example below there are two silver enamel pendants with the same shape but different colour. The most important thing here is to match the right colours.
Option 3: Buy a ready layered necklace
If you don't want to experiment or too lazy to match and mix, you can buy a ready layered necklace of your choice.
Layering By Mixing Metals, Gemstones, and Styles
There are a lot of "experts" out there who advise you not to mix metals. Why not? Why choose between silver and gold when you can have both? MIxed metals can work really well if the style or shape is similar. Here are some tips to help you with layering necklaces.
Create balance by mixing warm and cool tones
Combine silver with pearls
Gold jewellery with white gemstones look perfect blended with white metals
Do you have a colourful pendant like the one from an Armenian designer Lusine Harutyunyan shown below? Can you wear it with other necklaces? Of course. I would recommend to combine it with more simple necklaces. If you wish to match it with other pendants, it would be a good idea to use similar chains.
Being Creative
Remember that there are no rules. Who said that you should always wear necklaces in front? Why not try them on your back?
Open backs are so feminine. Layered necklaces look creative and artsy. I would recommend using 3 delicate necklaces of different length. I would also avoid placing on the back large gemstones or too many pieces at once.
